ولد بالقاهرة. تخرج في الكلية الحربية في عام 1938، و هي الدفعة التي كانت تضم كلًا من جمال عبدالناصر و أنور السادات و عبداللطيف البغدادي و حسين الشافعي. كان ضمن الفريق المصري للفروسية، تم تعيينه في منصب قائد مدرسة الفروسية بعد الثورة، استقال من الجيش ليتفرغ للعمل بالتمثيل.
