The Aviator

Martin Scorsese’s lavish 2004 biopic captures the tempestuous golden era of Howard Hughes, the eccentric Texas billionaire who conquered Hollywood soundstages and global flight paths with equal audacity. As a daring young filmmaker risking his fortune on the aerial spectacle 'Hell's Angels' and an aviator shattering world speed records, Hughes seems like the ultimate embodiment of untethered mid-century American ambition. He romances silver-screen royalty like Katharine Hepburn and Ava Gardner, moving through elite social circles with magnetic, relentless bravado. Yet beneath the crisp leather jackets and dazzling aviation triumphs lies a suffocating battle against Hughes's own unravelling psyche. As his empire expands into commercial airlines with TWA, pitting him against rival Pan Am and corrupt politicians, his crippling obsessive-compulsive disorder tightens its grip. The film balances soaring spectacle with claustrophobic intimacy, asking whether the drive to master the skies inevitably isolates a man from humanity below.
