The Basketball Diaries

Long before Leonardo DiCaprio became Hollywood royalty, he delivered one of the most blistering, gut-wrenching performances of the 1990s in Scott Kalvert's adaptation of Jim Carroll’s cult memoir. Set against the harsh concrete backdrop of New York City, Jim is a charismatic Catholic high school basketball phenom with a lyricist’s soul, pouring his rawest inner thoughts into a little black notebook while tearing up the court alongside his tight-knit crew. Yet the innocence is paper-thin. What begins as teenage defiance and curious flirtations with illicit highs soon mutates into a relentless heroin addiction. As his athletic ambitions slip away, the safety nets of school, team, and home collapse under the weight of deceit and desperation. Jim finds himself trading the bright lights of the gymnasium for the icy, unforgiving pavement of Manhattan, fighting to preserve the last scraps of his humanity.
